What is a Marriage and Family Therapist?
Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) are licensed mental health professionals specially trained in the family systems approach to help individuals, couples, and families overcome challenges by focusing on the dynamics and connections between intimate partners and family members. Marriage and Family Therapists believe that this focus allows you to work collaboratively to identify challenges and establish strategies necessary to function as a healthy family, couple, or individual.
What can I expect when I come in for an appointment?
When we meet at your first appointment, you will have an opportunity to share more about your reasons for seeking my help. We will work together to define your goals as an individual, couple, or family, and will use sessions to move toward accomplishing those goals. Most clients meet weekly. Sessions can be scheduled for 50 or 90 minutes.
How long does therapy last?
You are probably searching for the benefits of therapy and improvement in your life to take hold quickly. I often find that clients see progress after just a few sessions. One of the benefits of a family systems approach is that therapy tends to be briefer than other forms of therapy. The length of therapy does differ for each client. Therapy is a personal process that depends on several factors, such as the intensity of your presenting concerns, and your courage and commitment.
